What BRIDGE can tell you now
Family-register procedures can depend on the people involved, nationality, existing family-register status, and the municipality handling the filing. BRIDGE should help you identify the right filing and what to verify before submission.
What to check
- ✓Confirm which filing you actually need. Marriage, consensual divorce, adoption, dissolution of adoption, and voluntary recognition are separate family-register filings.
- ✓Check the municipality handling your case before relying on a generic document list, especially where a foreign national is involved.
Protective / preventive option
Important option you may not know exists: 不受理申出
Japan has a non-acceptance request system designed to help prevent certain family-register filings from being accepted when they do not reflect the person’s intent. It can apply to marriage, consensual divorce, adoption, consensual dissolution of adoption, and voluntary recognition. The Ministry of Justice says the request generally remains effective until the person withdraws it.
BRIDGE should present this as an available protective procedure, not as advice that everyone should file it. Eligibility and filing details should be confirmed with the municipality handling the request.
